How Data Recovery Tools work

Imagine your hard disk as a book. You've got a table of contents in the beginning, followed by the actual chapters. The thing that happens if you delete a file from your hard drive is, that the entry of that file in the computer's 'table of contents' is deleted - the actual file still is in that book though. And until that file is not overwritten by some other entry, it will stay there.

This fact is the basis on which all data recovery softwares are functioning. They simply go through your 'book', looking for the 'chapter' you want back. Of course this is a very abstract explanation and there are many differences between all the possible data recovery softwares you can get, but I will try to explain the essential pros and cons of the newest software on the market - ranging from freeware to expert tools.
